Tips For Acrylic Fabrication

Blog

If you are the manager of a company that relies on fabricating acrylics in order to custom make parts that you need for the product that your company sells, then you likely want to fine tune this process as much as possible. Here are some tips that you can follow in order to make sure that you are fabricating high quality acrylics every time.

1. Clean Your Raw Materials Correctly

Before you can fabricate acrylics, you will need make sure that there are no foreign contaminants on the raw material. However, the raw materials can be easily damaged by abrasive cleaners. To avoid this, simply use cleaners that don't have any ammonia or alcohol in them. Also be sure that you are using a cloth that will not leave lint on the raw materials. Lint counts as one of the contaminants that you are trying to remove. When you are wiping down the materials, be sure that you are not wiping them down too aggressively or else you risk causing them permanent damage, which will mean that you will have to throw them out, rather than cutting them and using them.

2. Use Table and Panel Saws for Straight Cuts

If you are going to be cutting many pieces of acrylic on top of each other, this is known as a high volume cut. This is a time saving measure, but it can also be extremely wasteful if you do it incorrectly. This is because a single straight cut can ruin many pieces of acrylic when done wrong. In order to decrease the chances of wasting that much material, make sure that you are using the right tool for the job. In this case, table and panel saws are best if you are only doing straight cuts on many pieces of acrylic that are stacked up.

3. Be Sure Your Bit and Speed is Correct

Finally, make sure that you are using the right speed for the type of drill bit that you have. Certain drill bits are going to work better at certain speeds. Check with the manufacturer of the drill bit for the optimal speed at which you should be using the bit. Do not go above or below this speed or else you risk damaging the bit, damaging the acrylic, and generally losing out on productivity.
